‍Overview

Inside the ClareHome iOS/Android application your smart home devices and security are brought into one app, with one unified experience. Users can easily add, view, and control their entire home inside one application without the need to switch between multiple applications. This product opened the door to support the growing products in the smart home space including paid music streaming services.

The Challenge

Managing, organizing and controlling your smart home experience can become cumbersome, especially as you grow your system. As I worked on designing the interface and experience for ClareHome I found ways to grow and improve the music streaming experience.

Research & Discovery

I explored the industry, downloaded streaming apps I normally wouldn't use just to get a good feel for the experience all were presenting. Also, I found other inspiration that I felt could be considered for possible room/service grouping solutions.

UX Workflow & Developer Handoff

Careful attention was given to the collaborative efforts of the entire team. I presented a UX workflow that was underlined and revised to fit the goals and team structure. This effort outlined the steps to be taken and how each person would be utilized to move the project forward. Defining key steps like the product design process, information architecture, UX documentation, and ADA compliance requirements help streamline our decision making for the wireframe and design stages.  

Mapping The User Journey

Introducing music streaming services began with mapping the user flow and behavior connecting services, audio grouping and now playing control. Defining the page architecture is the most critical step in the design of a complex system. The map and wireframes below detail the music set-up process and grouping which provided our team the ability to make high-level decisions with a birds-eye view of this feature.‍

Room and Source Grouping Made Easy‍

Based on the goals to continue to improve the music experience I presented a streamlined approach to controlling multiple rooms, speakers, and streaming services. To simplify this process in the app, I introduced source control inside the now playing view. Through this feature, the user can now easily add or switch streaming services in dedicated areas of their home.
